Vitae

Rage Magazine

Art Director

Rage Magazine first appeared on the streets of Montreal during the summer of 2006. Two years on, its print-run has increased from 10,000 to 80,000 copies, and is now found across Canada and select locations in New York. A truly Canadian Urban Lifestyle review, prolific musicians, weathered locals, and an eclectic mix of politicians and criminals pepper its pages. The visual identity appropriately follows suit: bold use of type and striking black and white result in edgy pages that reflect the editorial content and readers alike. Issue 5 was recently nominated for Best Cover at the 2007 Grands Prix in Quebec.

Chocolat Magazine

Art Director

Chocolat was launched nation-wide by Rogers Media in autumn 2006. It has been a source for stylish inspiration, fresh ideas and innovative solutions to Canada’s home decor challenges. After completing six weeks of intensive research and development, I was asked to create the signature brand and oversee its visual development from issue to issue. Two issues published concurrently (French/English) to the tune of 350,000 copies.

enRoute Magazine

Creative Consultant & Assistant Art Director

EnRoute is one of Canada’s premier lifestyle magazines with close to one million readers each month. It’s an award-winning magazine with a strong visual presence and innovative graphic design. The content is engaging, clever and celebrates an active international lifestyle while retaining a strong Canadian identity. In January 2005, enRoute underwent a major overhaul. Working with the Creative Director at Spafax Media, I was commissioned as a Creative Consultant and Designer. The re-conceived enRoute was launched in May, and shortly thereafter was asked to join the permanent staff as Assistant Art Director. Work I contributed to enRoute has been recognized for design excellence by the Grands Prix (Quebec), National Magazine Awards, Magnum Opus, Applied Arts, NATJA, and the Custom Publishing Council Pearl Awards.

V Magazine (SAQ)

Designer (RFP)

V magazine is a Spafax Special Project created in response to an RFP by the Societé d’Alcools de Québec (SAQ). Again teaming up with Creative Director Roland-Yves Carignan, I was charged with the role of designer. Combining luscious photography with elegant type selection the overall architecture challenges the idea of scale. The architecture of the page emphasizes the vertical, employing ample white spaces and feels oversized, spacious and luxurious.

Sum of Four

Art Director

Sheridan College of Art & Design is widely considered to be a leading institute in Arts & Crafts. The Sum of Four is a one-off glossy, oversized publication designed as both a promotional tool for the college, and as an exhibition for the graduating class of 2005. Through careful attention to detail with an emphasis on process, the catalogue emotes a sense of tactility and high-style, showcasing the skill of its participants and the beauty of their work. The exhibition and publication were carried over and exhibited in Toronto and New York.

Air Canada GUI

Art Director (IFE GUI & Airshow)

With the acquisition of new aircraft, and following the redesign of enRoute, I was commissioned by Spafax’s VP of E-Media, Raymond Girard, to create a sleek and sexy touch-screen entertainment system available onboard Air Canada’s new fleet. The interface was launched in early February 2006, and has since been recognized for its design excellence by the World Airlines Entertainment Association (WAEA).

Cathy Pacific

Art Director (RFP)

Our pitch for the Cathay Pacific in-flight entertainment system included a space for passengers to define their own system preferences, along with tailored grouping of entertainment modules such as audio, video & e-mail. The look and feel of the interface considers both Asian identity and an international audience. Both proud and emotional, the mix of hard shapes and organic textures and the subtle incorporation of the Cathay brand on every screen results in a passionate entertainment experience grounded by style.

U de M

Designer

For the past five years, the Faculté de Médecine at the Université de Montréal has been ranked as one of the top programs in this field. Médecine Montréal, a monthly publication, was commissioned with the aim to foster a flourishing community among the Faculty and its students. The emphasis is placed on skillful, flexible type pairings and clean attractive palettes. The result is a chic, contemporary tabloid well received by both client and audience.

Concordia

Art Director

The Sustainable Concordia Project is a university community group that has produced one of the first intensive assessments addressing issues of environmental, social and economic sustainability at Canadian Universities. From billboards and video projections to the 400+ page assessment itself, the overall design aimed to visit our relationship to our natural environment and the way in which it is used.

NACC

Art Director

In 2005, Montreal played host to the North American Cycle Courier Championships, a race designed specifically for the Urban Cyclist. This prolific event hosted by the Montreal Bike Messengers Association required a smooth and sporty branding package that would satisfy both potential corporate sponsors and racers. A palette of red, black and gold, along with clever use of helvetica brought to the materials a decidedly speedy feel.

The Gazette

Visual Editor

Based in Montreal, The Gazette is one of Canada’s largest newspapers, and is constantly evolving. As a Visual Editor, I produced daily editorial pages, whilst working with the Art Director to explore new ideas and section concepts in order to keep things moving.

Institut Hexagram

Researcher

Hexagram is an independent research institute, in which artists study the relationship between technology and art. As a research assistant to PK Langshaw, My primary areas of research included the study of typography as image, and later its relationship to skin, substance and surface

Lotus Eaters Gallery

Chief Curator

The Lotus eaters was a collective art gallery, aimed to promote young, emerging artists in the Montréal artistic community. Located in the Belgo Building in the heart of Place des Arts, The Lotus Eaters quickly became known for its innovative approach to the classic vernissage, including and exhibit which invited participants to paint it themselves.
